Russia completes state trials of S-400’s long-range missile

Russia successfully completed the state trials of the 40N6E long-range missile for the S-400 surface-to-air missile system, according to a 3 July statement by the TASS news agency.

“The state tests of the long-range 40H6E missile of the S-400 system were completed at the Kapustin Yar test site, the interdepartmental commission recognized them as successful, and a relevant act was signed,” said in a statement quoted by the TASS news agency. Also, specified that “the missile can be adopted for service until the end of the summer.”

The 40N6E is a long-range missile with an estimated operational range of 400 kilometers and an altitude of up to 185 kilometers. Some source reports that new missile capable of exo-atmospheric interception of intermediate-range ballistic missile warheads in their terminal phase.

The pilot batch of the 40N6E missiles, as reported in open sources, has been made in late 2013. In 2015, the Ministry of Defense for the first time announced the successful fire-test of this missile on an air target.

Compared with the Soviet-developed S-300, the S-400 air defence system with a new missile can destroy a much wider range of threats travelling at a speed of 4,800 m/s, e.g. intermediate-range ballistic missiles with a range of 3,000-3,500 km.
