Sweden showcases latest version of CV90 fighting vehicle

Sweden has announced the acquisition of 50 CV9035 Mk.IIIC infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) as part of its commitment to modernize its ground forces, following the donation of older CV9040C models to Ukraine earlier this year.

The new CV9035 Mk.IIIC vehicles were unveiled this week at the P7 South Scanian Regiment.

The contract, finalized in May 2024 with BAE Systems Hägglunds, includes delivery to the Swedish Armed Forces as well as units designated for Ukrainian forces through a joint Swedish-Danish initiative.

The CV9035 Mk.IIIC model, manufactured by BAE Systems Hägglunds, offers enhanced capabilities compared to the older CV9040C. This version, without add-on armor, features a retractable anti-tank missile launcher designed for RBS-58 (MBDA Akeron MP in Sweden’s variant). The vehicles bring improvements in firepower, maneuverability, and adaptability to modern battlefield requirements. This acquisition reflects Sweden’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities in light of heightened regional security challenges.

In addition to the 50 vehicles procured for Swedish forces, an initial batch of 25 CV9035 Mk.IIIC units will be provided to Ukraine. This delivery is part of a larger potential package that could ultimately include 40 more IFVs for Ukrainian use. Denmark has also indicated plans to purchase 115 CV9035 Mk.IIIC vehicles.

The first 50 units will be produced at BAE Systems Hägglunds’ facility in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. Future units for Ukraine and Denmark will be built on a new production line in the Netherlands, allowing for expanded production capacity.

The CV9035 Mk.IIIC was recently demonstrated in Denmark, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, highlighting its appeal across Europe as nations seek to modernize their IFV fleets.
