Polish defense firms to build Patriot missile launchers

In a significant step toward strengthening Poland’s air defense capabilities, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Paweł Bejda, representing the Ministry of National Defense, have announced the signing of a major contract for the production of 48 M903 missile launchers.

This contract, which involves key Polish defense firms, marks the beginning of the second phase of the Wisła program and the production of critical components between 2027 and 2029.

“We have signed a very important contract today,” said Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz during the signing ceremony. “This contract, which Polish defense companies have secured, involves the production of M903 missile launchers for the Patriot system. These launchers will be entirely manufactured in Poland, at Huta Stalowa Wola. This is a massive investment. Air defense is of fundamental importance, as we have learned from the experiences related to the war in Ukraine. Today, this is an unprecedented event, on such a scale, on Polish soil, within Polish companies, leveraging American technology in collaboration with U.S. companies and government.”

The Patriot air and missile defense system is a cornerstone of Poland’s air defense strategy. It is designed to counter short-range tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and manned aerial threats across the entire spectrum of speed and altitude, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles. The system’s integration into Poland’s defense infrastructure represents a significant enhancement in the country’s ability to defend against evolving threats.

The contract will see the participation of several Polish defense industry leaders. Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. (HSW) will spearhead the production, while key subcontractors include Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów S.A., which will supply actuators for the launchers, and Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne S.A., responsible for delivering the Data Link Terminal Module. Additional components for the Patriot systems, including technical support containers, transport and loading vehicles, launcher components, missile components, and radar systems, will be produced by companies within the PGZ-Wisła consortium.

As the production phase begins, this project is expected to further solidify Poland’s defense industry, enhancing its technological base and creating significant economic opportunities within the sector. The successful integration of the Patriot system will play a crucial role in Poland’s national defense and its contribution to NATO’s collective security framework.
