Qatar parades newly acquired SY-400 missile systems

Qatar displayed several newly acquired China-made short-range precision-attack ballistic missile systems at the Qatar National Day parade.

Among the equipment shown in the capital Doha was the new Chinese SY-400 short-range precision-attack ballistic missile systems.

That confirmed that the Qatar Armed Forces has acquired Chinese SY-400 short-range ballistic missile system with a range of 400 km. The SY-400 is a Chinese short-range precision-attack ballistic missile system intended for the export market. It is proposed as an alternative to the Russian Iskander-E SRBM system.

According to the defense-update.com, the SY-400 system seen in Qatar is configured with two pods containing the heavier DF-12A missiles (formerly known as M20), a downgraded export version of the DF-12 ballistic missile, used by the Chinese military.

The missiles are fitted with GPS/INS guidance system. They are steered to the intended target in the initial flight phase by four control surfaces and stabilizing fins. Missile uses low lowering rate to extend the range. Multiple missiles can be aimed at different targets.

The missile carrier can be configured flexibly to carry four SY-400 missiles in one pod, and a single BP-12A on the other. The SY-400 is mounted on a Wanshan 8×8 carrier-launcher vehicle, supported by a reloading vehicle of a similar type, fitted with a crane and missile containers (also was spotted during a parade).
