China’s NORINCO Group has introduced its new OW5-A50 laser air defense system in a promotional video, marking the first public appearance of the platform.
Mounted on an advanced 8×8 heavy truck chassis, the OW5-A50 is designed to counter small, low-flying aerial threats such as drones, including Iranian-made Shahed systems currently deployed in conflict zones.
According to NORINCO, the OW5-A50 is fully autonomous in terms of power generation, requiring no external energy source during operations. The system, part of a broader OW5 family of laser weapons, was showcased during recent defense exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt, where China actively promoted the technology for export.
The OW5-A50 offers an additional layer of air defense, particularly against slow and low-altitude targets. The weapon’s laser can engage a range of small aerial systems, potentially complementing existing air defense networks.

The OW5 series includes variants such as the A10, A30, and A50, with the trailing number indicating the system’s power output. The OW5-A30 delivers 30 kilowatts, while the OW5-A50, the most powerful of the series, reaches 50 kilowatts. NORINCO asserts these systems can neutralize drones at various altitudes and distances depending on their energy output.
Defense analysts note that while NORINCO has highlighted the OW5-A50’s potential to destroy small, low-speed targets, claims about its ability to intercept mortars or even helicopters remain unverified.
The system’s integration on a mobile platform allows for rapid deployment, making it attractive for countries seeking versatile counter-drone solutions.
