China sees market opportunity for laser weapon in Middle East

China is stepping up its presence in international defense markets by actively promoting its military products, including the innovative OW5-A50 laser weapon system, across the Middle East.

Developed by China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), this state-of-the-art air defense system has been showcased at defense exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt.

The OW5-A50 system is designed to counter “low, slow, and small” aerial threats, a capability that highlights the evolving nature of warfare and defense strategies. This system represents a significant advancement in laser weapon technology.

“The OW5-A50 laser system is a leap forward in our defense technology offerings, designed to provide reliable protection against increasingly common aerial threats,” stated a NORINCO spokesperson at the Egypt International Air Show 2024.

The system integrates three main components: the launcher and landing system positioned centrally on the vehicle, a presumed battery unit at the front, and a command and control room at the rear, which is enclosed by glass doors.

This laser system boasts mobile launch capabilities, suggesting a high level of autonomy with its own energy supply and command facilities. This independence from additional power generation and launch command vehicles demonstrates the system’s high integration and basic combat readiness. “The OW5 system’s integrated design allows for rapid deployment and operation, enhancing its effectiveness in actual combat scenarios,” the spokesperson added.

China’s push to market the OW5-A50 in the Middle East is part of a broader strategy to expand its influence in global defense markets. By offering advanced technologies that can address specific regional security challenges, China aims to establish itself as a dependable partner in the defense sector.
