Ukrainian naval drone downs Russian Mi-8 helicopter

For the first time in military history, Ukrainian forces have successfully used an armed naval drone to destroy an aerial target.

The strike occurred on December 31, 2024, near Cape Tarkhankut in the temporarily occupied region of Crimea, marking a milestone in modern warfare.

During a combat operation in the Black Sea, a Ukrainian special operations unit, “Group 13” from the Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR MO), deployed a Maritime Autonomous Guard Unmanned Robotic Apparatus (MAGURA) V5 uncrewed surface vessel (USV) equipped with missile systems.

Using R-73 (NATO reporting name AA-11 Archer) short-range missiles, the drone targeted two Russian Mi-8 helicopters.

One helicopter was destroyed, while the second sustained damage but managed to return to its base.

This operation showcases the evolving role of unmanned systems in modern combat. The Magura V5 naval drone, an advanced piece of Ukrainian technology, is designed for precision strikes and versatile deployment in various combat scenarios.

The success of this mission demonstrates Ukraine’s capability to integrate cutting-edge unmanned systems with conventional weaponry, achieving unprecedented results. It also reflects the growing reliance on innovative technologies to counter traditional military advantages in contested zones such as the Black Sea.
