Ukrainian Forces blow up Russian S-400 system in Crimea

Key Points
  • Ukrainian Special Operations Forces said they destroyed an S-400 launcher and a Russian ammunition depot in occupied Crimea.
  • The strikes were carried out on October 6, 2025, with support from local resistance networks and drone units.

Ukrainian Special Operations Forces said Saturday that they carried out coordinated strikes against Russian positions in occupied Crimea, destroying an ammunition depot and a launcher from the S-400 air-defense system.

The operation was conducted together with the underground resistance movement inside the peninsula, the forces said.

According to the official release, “The Resistance Movement of the Special Operations Forces, in cooperation with Deep Strike units of the Special Operations Forces, carried out strikes against enemy facilities in occupied Crimea. The final phase of the special actions took place on October 6, 2025, but it was not disclosed earlier for operational security.”

The account states that resistance members first obtained intelligence showing the location of an ammunition warehouse belonging to Russia’s 18th Army in the village of Udachne near Simferopol. Further reconnaissance confirmed that the site was actively used for storing ammunition. The Special Operations Forces said the depot was struck during the night of October 6 using drones operated by Ukrainian units.

The same day, the forces say, Ukrainian operators destroyed a mobile launcher belonging to the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile system in the village of Uyutne near Yevpatoria. The statement emphasized that the system is not only used as air defense, but also for launching attacks into Ukrainian territory.

The release stated, “That same day, Special Operations units destroyed the launcher of a mobile S-400 Triumf air-defense system. The air-defense facility was located in the village of Uyutne near Yevpatoria. The S-400 is designed to detect and engage air targets at long range; the enemy also uses this system to conduct strikes against Ukrainian territory.”

The forces described the action as part of a continuing campaign designed to pressure Russian forces and degrade their ability to conduct offensive operations. “Special Operations Forces continue asymmetric actions aimed at exhausting the enemy’s ability to sustain offensive activity,” the statement said.

Ukrainian defense observers and field reports suggest that the strike on the S-400 launcher was carried out using an FP-2 type attack drone. The Special Operations Forces did not specify the platform in the release, and there is no independent visual confirmation yet, but the method is consistent with previous operations conducted against fixed or semi-fixed high-value Russian military sites in Crimea.

The S-400 system forms part of the layered air-defense network that Russia uses to control airspace across Crimea and the western Black Sea. Removing even a single launcher can force Russian units to reposition assets, divert supplies, and increase protective measures around remaining sites.
