Ukrainian forces recently executed a large-scale drone assault on Russian positions, deploying 400 small unmanned aerial vehicles in a coordinated battlefield strike that reportedly destroyed more than 40 pieces of enemy combat vehicles, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters.
“This was an interesting strike on them,” Zelenskyy said. “We struck simultaneously with 400 small drones. More than 40 vehicles were destroyed at once. This operation was carried out exclusively by the military, directly on the battlefield.”
The president described the action as a first-of-its-kind attempt by Ukrainian forces to test swarm drone tactics in a real combat setting. While details on the location and date of the strike were not disclosed, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine intends to build on the success of this operation with even more ambitious efforts in the future.
In his remarks, Zelenskyy also underscored the growing role of drone-on-drone combat in Ukraine’s evolving air defense capabilities.
“We understand how many Mirage, F-16s [jets] are able to shoot down in one flight, and how many we can use simultaneously in the air,” he said. “We are also advancing in the area of drone interceptors. We are already using them.”
The use of drone swarms in combat highlights Ukraine’s shifting tactics as it adapts to the evolving dynamics of the battlefield. The country continues to rely heavily on unmanned systems for both strike missions and air defense as part of its broader response to Russia’s ongoing aggression.
The Ukrainian government has increasingly highlighted its domestic drone production and deployment efforts in recent months, viewing such technologies as essential to countering Russia’s numerical superiority in conventional arms.
