Ukraine showcases upgraded Leopard 1 tank

Ukraine has showcased its newly upgraded Leopard 1A5V tanks, marking the first public demonstration of these modernized Cold War-era machines.

The upgraded tanks, now part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 5th Separate Tank Brigade, were displayed in photos and videos shared by the Ukrainian military.

The tanks have been fitted with additional armor and protective screens to counter the growing threat of enemy FPV drones on the battlefield. The enhancements include explosive reactive armor (ERA), covering the entire frontal projection of the vehicle, including the lower frontal plate, turret, and side hull. The turret-hull connection, a vulnerable point, has also received extra protection.

A key feature of the upgrade is a comprehensive mesh screen system, designed to reduce the effectiveness of enemy drones during combat. These defenses offer an added layer of security for the crew, who face increasing challenges from advanced unmanned aerial systems used by Russian forces.

Ukrainian soldiers have expressed high praise for the Leopard 1 tanks. “An ideal machine for war. An ideal machine for destroying the enemy,” they remarked.

The Leopard 1, known for its quality, stability, and endurance, has proven itself on the battlefield with its speed and accuracy. The tank can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h and delivers precise fire at ranges of up to 4 kilometers.

The Leopard 1, originally developed during the Cold War, is no longer in service with the German Army, but significant quantities of these tanks are available from storage depots of partner countries. However, one challenge remains: securing ammunition for the tank’s 105mm rifled main gun, a problem that could complicate its continued use in modern combat.
