The Swedish Armed Forces has placed an additional order for 94 Patria 6×6 armored vehicles, designated Pansarterrängbil 300 in Sweden, as part of the expanding Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) initiative.
According to a statement issued on December 1 by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the order includes troop transport, command and control, and medical evacuation variants.
The vehicles will be manufactured by Patria, the Finnish defense contractor leading the CAVS program, with substantial participation from Sweden’s domestic industry. The contract is valued at approximately SEK 1.5 billion, or roughly $163 million.
“Sweden’s decision to procure an additional batch of Patria 6×6 vehicles represents a solid sign of trust and the joint power of [the] Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme, which further solidifies the interoperability and security of supply among allied nations,” said Mats Warstedt, Vice President of Market Area Nordics at Patria.
In 2024, Sweden committed to the acquisition of 321 vehicles. This new order brings the total to 415 Patria 6×6 units scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2030.
The acquisition falls under the Finnish-led multinational CAVS cooperation framework, a joint defense initiative involving Sweden, Latvia, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The CAVS program is designed to enhance interoperability and secure logistical and industrial supply chains across allied countries. Participation is open to other nations with similar equipment requirements, subject to the approval of current members.
Patria is the prime contractor for the program and leads the system development for the 6×6 platform. With over 40 years of experience in protected troop transport and systems integration, the company has already delivered over 250 vehicles under the CAVS framework and secured orders for more than 1,000.
As noted by the company, the vast majority of vehicle production relies on each participating nation’s domestic industrial capacity. This approach is intended to reinforce the collective security of supply and ensure that each member country retains critical production capability in times of conflict or crisis.
The Pansarterrängbil 300, manufactured by Patria and operated by the Swedish Armed Forces, is a modular, high-mobility armored platform intended to serve in multiple battlefield roles. Its deployment in Sweden aligns with NATO standards for joint operations and reflects broader trends in regional defense planning, particularly in light of evolving security conditions in Northern and Eastern Europe.
