On September 24, 2024, the Republic of Singapore Navy officially commissioned its first two non-nuclear submarines, Invincible and Impeccable, built in Germany as part of the 218SG project.
The commissioning ceremony took place at Changi Naval Base.
The 218SG submarines, designed specifically to meet Singapore’s operational requirements, are part of a four-submarine deal signed with German shipbuilding company thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The first contract, signed in December 2013, was followed by an additional agreement in May 2017 for the construction of two more submarines. While official contract details remain undisclosed, German sources estimate the total value at approximately €3.2 billion.
Construction of these submarines began at TKMS’s Kiel shipyard, with the lead vessel, Invincible, launched on February 18, 2019. Following extensive sea trials and crew training in Germany, the submarine was transported to Singapore on September 18, 2024. Impeccable, launched on December 13, 2022, was the first to arrive in Singapore, having completed its trials and transported in July 2023.
The 218SG submarines represent an enhanced version of the widely exported German Type 214 submarine, boasting increased surface displacement of 2,000 tons and a length of 70 meters. The submarines feature advanced technologies, including air-independent propulsion systems, derived from HDW/Siemens electrochemical generators, and an X-shaped rudder design adapted from the German Type 212A submarines. With eight 533mm torpedo tubes and two larger 650mm tubes, the submarines are equipped for multiple mission types, including special operations.
The vessels also feature the latest combat management systems (CMS), developed jointly by Atlas Elektronik and Singapore Technologies Electronics, allowing for greater operational flexibility. Despite their sophistication, the 218SG submarines have a crew of just 28 personnel, highlighting the advanced automation and efficiency of the design.
