Russian experts question Ukrainian troops encirclement claims

In a recent analysis by the influential Russian Telegram channel “Voenniy Obozrevatel” (Military Observer), questions have been raised about the accuracy of claims regarding the full encirclement of Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk region.

The channel, known for its close links to Russian military sources, published maps depicting the actual deployment of Ukrainian forces. These illustrations contradict assertions of a complete encirclement. According to the analysis, “Those captured in small groups or individually were soldiers left behind to cover the withdrawal of main forces or those who became isolated at their positions after bridges and logistics routes were compromised.”

The channel further elaborated, “The enemy retained the ability to leave the Kursk region on foot through forests and fields, meaning there was never a complete physical encirclement.”

This clarification comes amid highly publicized statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin and current U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the alleged encirclement and Ukrainian requests for mercy. The channel describes these statements as potentially strategic political maneuvers aimed at achieving broader diplomatic objectives.

According to “Voenniy Obozrevatel,” the actual situation involved Ukrainian forces retreating due to disrupted logistical supply lines rather than a total operational encirclement. Soldiers captured in smaller numbers were identified as those tasked with covering the withdrawal or those isolated by disrupted logistics.

The channel suggested the political rhetoric from Putin and Trump could be part of larger strategic posturing, noting, “Russia currently enjoys battlefield advantages, and immediate ceasefire or truce holds limited appeal without substantial concessions from Ukraine.”

This analysis underscores ongoing complexities surrounding battlefield narratives and political diplomacy amid evolving regional tensions.

Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clarified the situation after discussions with General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukraine’s ground forces. Zelenskyy stated clearly, “The operation of our forces in certain areas of Kursk region continues. Units are performing tasks precisely as needed. Thanks to Ukrainian forces, a major threat was diverted in the Kursk region.”

President Zelenskyy also warned that Russia is amassing forces along Ukraine’s eastern border, indicating potential plans to strike Ukraine’s Sumy region and signaling Moscow’s willingness to disregard diplomatic channels.

“We understand this and will respond accordingly. It is clear Russia intends to further ignore diplomatic solutions. The prolongation of the war by Russia is evident,” Zelenskyy noted, adding, “We are ready to provide our partners with accurate frontline information, including the Kursk region and border areas.”
