The Russian defense industry has introduced a modernized version of a Cold War-era tracked multipurpose armored vehicle, the MGT-LB, which was showcased at the Army-2024 exhibition.
This new model is set to potentially replace the aging MT-LB, a vehicle that has been in service with the Russian Armed Forces since the 1970s.
The MGT-LB, developed by OKR “Transporter,” is designed as a versatile all-terrain vehicle capable of fulfilling a wide range of military tasks, from transporting personnel, ammunition, and supplies to serving as a platform for weapons and specialized equipment. It is built to operate in various climatic conditions, from the icy tundra to mountainous forested regions, with an operational temperature range from +50 to -40 degrees Celsius.
Weighing 16,500 kilograms with a payload capacity of 2,500 kilograms, the MGT-LB can tow loads and trailers weighing up to 7 tons. The vehicle’s armor provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shrapnel, enhancing its survivability on the battlefield. The crew consists of two operators, with space in the troop compartment for up to eight soldiers. Powered by a 450-horsepower diesel engine, the MGT-LB can reach a top speed of 70 km/h on land and, with its amphibious capabilities, can move through water at speeds of up to 10 km/h.
For defensive purposes, the vehicle can be equipped with remotely controlled weapon stations on its roof, capable of mounting machine guns to engage enemy forces.
The Russian military has long sought a replacement for the MT-LB, a vehicle that has seen extensive use since the Soviet era.
