Leonardo DRS orders new AI-enabled counter-drone system from Axon Vision

Israel’s Axon Vision announced on January 12, 2026, that it received an order from Leonardo DRS for its new AI-based system designed for counter-unmanned aircraft missions, marking the first delivery under the companies’ expanding partnership.

According to the company, the order is valued at approximately $350,000 and covers an initial batch of systems capable of end-to-end detection, classification, tracking, and interception of aerial threats. Axon Vision said the equipment is engineered to address rapidly emerging UAS and low-altitude threats requiring immediate response.

Axon Vision noted that the order builds on a cooperation agreement the two companies signed in late 2025. That agreement combines Leonardo DRS’s experience in advanced sensing and system integration with Axon Vision’s AI-driven technologies for perception, autonomy, and automated threat identification. The firms aim to field mission systems that improve survivability, situational awareness, and lethality across ground and maritime platforms.

The company said the new systems are intended to support U.S. defense and homeland security forces. They are scheduled for operational evaluations and live exercises on a range of manned and unmanned ground platforms, with the testing focused on assessing performance in counter-UAS and mobile force protection roles. Axon Vision said the trials will demonstrate modularity, flexibility, and compatibility with standard U.S. military integration interfaces.

The system features AI-powered processing workflows intended to reduce operator workload and support autonomous decision cycles, though Axon Vision said all systems remain aligned with U.S. requirements for human-on-the-loop control during interception.

The company also described the new hardware as part of a broader effort to provide scalable defense against drones, including small quadcopters, fixed-wing UAS, and improvised airborne platforms. The modular design allows the system to integrate with multiple sensor types and existing counter-UAS infrastructure used by U.S. agencies.
