French reconnaissance aircraft spotted in Caribbean airspace

Key Points
  • A French military ISR plane, registered F-ZBGO, was tracked flying across the Caribbean.
  • The flight coincided with radar activity visible from Puerto Rico on ADS-B monitoring platforms.

A French military radar aircraft was tracked conducting a flight through the Caribbean on Thursday, drawing attention after aviation observers linked the aircraft’s route to ongoing radar activity detected from Puerto Rico.

Open-source aviation monitor Aviation and Naval Assets highlighted the flight, noting that a Beechcraft Super King Air B350, registered under the French military tail number F-ZBGO, appeared on public ADS-B tracking platforms.

“French Beechcraft Super King Air (B350) (reg. F-ZBGO) and radar beams from Puerto Rico showing up still on ADSB,” the tracker posted.

The aircraft, labeled GALAXY1 on ADSBexchange, was seen traveling across the northern Caribbean airspace. While the platform does not identify mission type, the B350 variant is commonly used by France for surveillance, reconnaissance, maritime patrol, and signals intelligence missions, depending on configuration. The aircraft type has previously supported operations in the Sahel, Mediterranean, and over maritime zones requiring persistent observation.

The radar patterns visible near Puerto Rico, also noted on ADSBexchange, appeared as broad sweeps indicative of ground-based radar activity. While public flight-tracking tools occasionally display such traces when radar calibration or airspace monitoring is active, their presence alongside a French surveillance aircraft has drawn interest within OSINT communities.

There has been heightened aviation monitoring in the region in recent weeks, as U.S. strategic bombers and special operations aircraft have been observed flying missions near Venezuela and throughout the southern Caribbean. These flights have included B-52H strategic bombers, B-1B Lancers, and C-146A Wolfhound transports associated with Air Force Special Operations Command. The French aircraft’s activity adds another international presence to this developing pattern of airborne reconnaissance across the region.

Neither the French Ministry of Armed Forces nor U.S. officials have issued a public statement regarding the King Air’s mission profile. The aircraft’s track suggests either a collection run along designated corridors, though verifying its exact role would require official confirmation.

France operates multiple modified Super King Air platforms equipped with advanced sensors for maritime domain awareness, counter-smuggling operations, and ISR support. Their relatively small airframe and low operating cost make them useful for long-duration flights in regions where larger military aircraft would draw attention.

The broader context includes rising regional tensions and increased monitoring of air-and-sea trafficking routes, military movements, and strategic chokepoints. Caribbean airspace overlaps several zones of interest for Western defense partners, including sanctions enforcement, counternarcotics patrols, and stability operations linked to Haiti and Venezuela.
