Denmark buys 18 Bohdana howitzers for Ukraine

Denmark has announced an order for 18 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers to support Ukrainian military efforts.

The Danish Ministry of Defense confirmed the deal for Ukrainian-made artillery systems on July 10, emphasizing the rapid delivery schedule with expected arrivals in the coming months.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted the significance of this acquisition during his recent visit to Kyiv, where he assessed the capabilities of Ukraine’s defense industry.

“When I was in Ukraine this spring to visit several defense industry enterprises in Kyiv, I was convinced of the potential for supporting Ukraine by purchasing directly from its defense industry,” Poulsen said. “This ensures that the equipment needed on the front lines can be produced and delivered nearby, providing clear logistical advantages and helping to build Ukraine’s defense industry.”

Poulsen encouraged other countries to adopt Denmark’s model of procurement from Ukraine, stressing the substantial production capacity in Ukraine that surpasses current financial resources. “There is great potential for similar agreements to produce more equipment in Ukraine,” he added.

The 2S22 Bohdana self-propelled howitzer is a product of the collaboration between the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Building Plant and Ukrainian Armor, both key members of the National Association of Ukrainian Defense Industries. The Bohdana is based on 6×6 and 8×8 wheeled chassis, with the latest 3.0 version using the Tatra PHOENIX 8×8 chassis.
