China’s newest nuclear submarine spotted in sea trials

Recent images circulating on social media have raised speculation about China’s latest nuclear-powered attack submarine, allegedly the Type 093B class.

Although the image quality is not sharp, experts have noted that the submarine’s design marks a significant departure from previous Chinese models, sparking discussions among defense analysts worldwide.

The 093B-class submarine exhibits modern, streamlined design elements. Its hull appears sleek, with a command tower featuring a 3D cockpit-style structure. The forward section of the command tower has been integrated smoothly with the hull, reducing drag and minimizing noise. Submarines generate noise from three main sources: mechanical, propeller, and hydrodynamic noise. At high speeds, the command tower is often the primary source of hydrodynamic noise, making its refined design critical for improved stealth.

This design modification highlights a focus on acoustic stealth, which is crucial for submarines to evade detection in underwater operations. The sleek silhouette suggests that the 093B has advanced quieting features, positioning it as one of China’s most silent submarines to date.

In reviewing the Type 093B’s design, experts have noticed similarities to a submarine model previously displayed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited. The resemblance between the model and the images from the sea trials suggests that the model was an accurate representation of the 093B’s final design.

One key feature of the 093B, as seen in the model, is its use of a pump-jet propulsion system, a notable improvement over the conventional propeller used in earlier Chinese submarines. Pump-jets offer higher efficiency at high speeds, better resistance to cavitation, and significantly reduced noise compared to traditional propellers. This advanced propulsion system places the 093B-class in line with the latest submarines fielded by the U.S., Russia, and European navies.

Another first for China’s attack submarines is the introduction of a vertical launch system (VLS) on the 093B. The model shows a 3×6 VLS configuration midship, allowing the submarine to carry a variety of missile systems. This feature boosts the submarine’s firepower by enabling higher missile density and increasing the number of weapons it can carry. The VLS also allows for simultaneous missile launches, enhancing the submarine’s ability to overwhelm enemy defenses.

The VLS can accommodate a range of missiles, including anti-ship cruise missiles, land-attack cruise missiles, and anti-ship or land-attack ballistic missiles. This versatility provides the 093B with greater operational flexibility, allowing it to strike different types of targets in various combat scenarios.

According to reports from defense outlets, satellite imagery captured by Planet Labs between January 13 and 18, 2023, revealed that China had launched its eighth 093-class nuclear attack submarine at Huludao Shipyard, marking the second 093B-class submarine in this batch. Unlike previous Chinese submarine production patterns, which focused on small, incremental improvements, the 093B appears to have entered serial production from the start. This suggests a high level of system maturity and reliability, indicating that China has overcome key technological hurdles and is now capable of producing these submarines in large numbers.

In June 2024, during a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Submarine Force, Chinese state media revealed a significant shift in China’s naval strategy. The PLAN has transitioned to a dual-capability force, emphasizing nuclear-powered platforms. The large-scale production of the 093B-class submarines is a testament to this strategic shift and China’s growing confidence in its submarine capabilities.

The 093B’s deployment will enhance China’s underwater deterrence capabilities and mark a significant step in the modernization of its naval forces.
