Austria is in negotiations to acquire 12 M-346FA light fighter jets from Italy to replace the Saab 105 aircraft that were retired from service in late 2020.
The planned purchase underscores Austria’s efforts to modernize its air force capabilities and maintain a robust defense posture.
The Austrian Ministry of Defense confirmed the ongoing discussions with the Italian government, with both sides aiming to finalize the agreement. Chancellor Karl Nehammer highlighted the deal as a testament to the strong bilateral relations between Austria and Italy.
“I express my sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose contributions have been instrumental in bringing this agreement closer to fruition,” Nehammer said in a statement.
The M-346FA (Fighter Attack) is a multi-role light fighter aircraft derived from the M-346 advanced jet trainer. It is designed for a range of missions, including pilot training, close air support, tactical reconnaissance, and battlespace air interdiction. The aircraft’s flexibility enables it to fulfill diverse roles, offering operators a cost-effective and adaptable solution.
The aircraft is also well-suited for urban close air support operations and can provide robust national air defense capabilities. Its ability to conduct Aggressor and Companion Trainer missions makes it a highly valuable platform for evolving defense needs.
The Austrian government plans to use the M-346FA jets primarily for training pilots, supporting ground forces, and enhancing air defense capabilities. The jets’ advanced avionics and multi-role features will ensure Austria can meet modern operational requirements while maintaining a focus on cost efficiency.
The potential agreement further deepens the defense collaboration between Austria and Italy, emphasizing the strategic importance of partnerships within the European Union. The M-346FA jets, produced by Leonardo, represent Italy’s commitment to providing cutting-edge defense solutions to its allies.
