Allison Transmission has announced a new contract with Türkiye-based licensed manufacturer HST Otomotiv to supply X1100-5A4 cross-drive transmissions for the next-generation T-155 Fırtına self-propelled howitzers.
The ULUSavunma has reported that the agreement, which marks the second phase of Allison’s cooperation with Turkish defense industry partners, further strengthens the country’s artillery modernization program.
The contract covers the supply of an additional 32 transmissions, with deliveries expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026. The Allison X1100 cross-drive transmission is specifically designed for heavy tracked combat vehicles weighing between 45 and 63 tons, ensuring enhanced mobility and durability on the battlefield.
According to the report, the Turkish Armed Forces plan to acquire approximately 140 to 160 units of the new-generation Fırtına howitzers. The program includes several advanced features, such as an electrically powered turret and barrel positioning system, an automatic ammunition loading system, and integration with the SARP Remote-Controlled Weapon System (RCWS).
Equipped with a 155mm 52-caliber barrel, the T-155 Fırtına is compatible with NATO-standard ammunition and can engage targets at distances of up to 40 kilometers, depending on the type of projectile used. The vehicle is designed with a fully welded steel armor hull, providing protection against 14.5mm caliber small arms fire and shell fragments, prioritizing crew survivability in combat conditions.
Powering the T-155 Fırtına is the MTU 881 Ka-500 diesel engine, which generates 1,000 horsepower, allowing the howitzer to reach speeds of 67 km/h and traverse a variety of challenging terrains with ease. The integration of an advanced fire control system, GPS navigation, and NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) protection, developed by Aselsan, enhances the howitzer’s operational efficiency and ensures crew safety in diverse battlefield scenarios.
