Ukrainian FPV uses cannons to down Russian drones

Ukrainian forces have successfully outfitted FPV (first-person view) drones with miniature cannons, enabling them to intercept and destroy Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in mid-flight.

The first recorded cases of these “drone-shotguns” in action show Ukrainian drones engaging and shooting down Russian Mavic UAVs armed with grenades.

This marks the first known use of FPV drones as interceptors equipped with onboard weaponry. The innovative design allows Ukrainian drones to directly engage aerial threats, a tactic that could redefine battlefield strategies involving UAVs.

The videos, shared by Ukrainian military personnel, depict the drones firing accurately at their targets, successfully neutralizing them before they could pose a threat to ground forces or infrastructure. The footage highlights both the ingenuity and adaptability of Ukrainian forces in leveraging drone technology to counter Russian operations.

The “drone-shotgun” concept involves mounting a compact, lightweight cannon onto an FPV drone. These drones are already known for their agility and speed, making them ideal for close-quarters aerial engagements. By adding a weapon system, Ukrainian engineers have effectively transformed them into multi-role platforms capable of both reconnaissance and interception.

The use of such technology reflects a growing trend in modern warfare, where small, inexpensive UAVs are adapted for a variety of missions. This approach offers a cost-effective solution to counter enemy drones, which have become a pervasive threat in the conflict.
