Ukrainian drone takes down Russian Orion

Ukrainian forces have successfully intercepted and destroyed a Russian Orion unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near the Russian border using a drone-based interceptor system, according to a report from Militarnyi.

The Russian combat-reconnaissance drone was brought down by the “Topot” team from the 414th Separate Brigade of Unmanned Systems. In a statement, Militarnyi noted that this was the unit’s first confirmed kill of an Orion UAV, a heavier and more advanced drone than those typically encountered.

The interception occurred near the village of Tyotkino in Russia’s Kursk region, at coordinates 51.2862, 34.3813, based on open-source geolocation analysis.

The 414th Brigade has reportedly neutralized nearly 1,500 enemy UAVs since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. These have included smaller platforms such as Orlan, ZALA, SuperCam, and Shahed drones, as well as more capable systems like the Merlin and Forpost. The Orion, however, represents a rare and more complex target.

According to the report, the Orion was initially engaged by interceptor drones operated by Ukraine’s 95th Air Assault Brigade. The target was later finished off by the “Birds of Magyar” strike group.

Militarnyi emphasized that Russia uses Orion drones sparingly due to their limited numbers and vulnerability to Ukraine’s layered air defense network.

Russia’s use of Orion drones in the conflict has drawn attention because of their multi-role capability. Developed by the Kronstadt company, the Orion can carry precision-guided munitions and conduct long-range surveillance. However, Kronstadt is currently near collapse due to international sanctions and repeated Ukrainian strikes on its production facility near Moscow.
