Ukrainian bomber spotted testing new guided bomb

A Ukrainian Sukhoi Su-24M bomber has been seen carrying a previously unseen precision-guided bomb under its wing, according to footage dated August 2024.

The video, which surfaced recently, shows the bomber on a test flight believed to be evaluating a new Ukrainian-designed guided aerial bomb, similar to Western models such as the U.S.-supplied JDAM-ER (Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range) and the French Hammer precision-guided bomb.

The description accompanying the footage states: “A bomber conducts a test flight to test a new guided aerial bomb.” The test signals continued advancements in Ukraine’s domestic military production capabilities amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Video of the aircraft suggest the possible inclusion of a compact turbojet engine, which would enhance the bomb’s range and precision, much like the JDAM-ER’s winged design, which allows for extended-range strikes on enemy targets. If confirmed, the new bomb would mark a significant step forward for Ukraine’s air force, as precision-guided munitions are vital for reducing collateral damage while enhancing strike efficiency.

The Su-24M, originally designed for the Soviet Air Force, has been a mainstay of Ukraine’s aerial operations. The addition of domestically developed precision-guided munitions could further boost its effectiveness against Russian positions, following similar efforts by Ukraine to integrate Western technologies and locally produced systems into its arsenal.
