U.S. Army signs $639M contract for non-standard 155mm shells

The U.S. Army has awarded Global Military Products Inc., based in Tampa, Florida, a $640 million contract for the procurement of 155mm High Explosive complete rounds.

The award was made under the Special Ammunitions and Weapons Systems (SAWS) program.

According to the Department of War announcement, bids were solicited online and two offers were received. The Army Contracting Command at Rock Island, Illinois, is the contracting activity for the deal, listed as W519TC-25-F-0388. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, and the estimated completion date for the contract is July 10, 2027.

The SAWS program covers ammunition and mortar weapons systems that have not undergone full U.S. Army safety testing and type classification. Because of that, these items cannot be procured through the Army’s standard supply system. Instead, SAWS provides a channel for acquiring such systems, which are primarily intended for non-U.S. weapon platforms.

In program terms, SAWS and non-NATO standard ammunition refer largely to equipment developed and produced by the former Soviet Union or Eastern Bloc countries. These systems remain in widespread use by partner and allied nations, many of whom rely on legacy Soviet-caliber weapons.

For the Army, the contract represents both continuity and urgency in supplying munitions that are compatible with non-standard systems. The deal ensures continued production and delivery of 155mm High Explosive rounds at a time when demand for artillery ammunition has grown across multiple regions.

The company has not released additional details about production sites or delivery schedules, and the Army has not disclosed the specific recipients of the rounds. However, with each order, funding and work locations will be identified, offering flexibility to meet operational needs through 2027.
