Turkey’s military base to be opened in Somalia in September

Turkey’s largest military base abroad will be opened in September in Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu.

That was reported defense-blog.fr.

The construction costs reportedly make up $50 million. About 500 soldiers will be able to train at the same time, the base occupies 400 hectares and includes three military schools, dormitories and depots.

Some 200 Turkish soldiers will be stationed at the base in Somalia, involved in training exercises. It is unclear whether the troops will be involved in any other conflict related mission.

Up to 1,500 troops can be stationed at the camp at one time in what will become Turkey’s larges overseas base.

Somalia has been mired in an armed conflict with Islamist militants for about two decades. The crisis has significantly undermined the positions of the country’s government within the country’s territory and made it rely on foreign assistance, with Turkey being one of the main investors and aid providers.
