Sweden to send additional artillery systems to Ukraine

Sweden has announced plans to deliver 18 more Archer mobile artillery systems to Ukraine as part of its ongoing military support for the country’s fight against Russia.

The decision, unveiled on Thursday, also includes the donation of five Arthur counter-battery radar units. This contribution is part of Sweden’s 18th military aid package to Ukraine, aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s artillery capabilities.

“Ukraine is in urgent need of artillery and artillery ammunition. This has been a priority for Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion,” Swedish Minister for Defence Pål Jonson said in a statement.

The Swedish government noted that deliveries of the Arthur radar systems will begin this year, while the Archer systems will start arriving in 2026. The total value of the artillery package is estimated at three billion kronor ($295 million).

Sweden has been a consistent supplier of military aid to Ukraine, shifting its approach from donating weapons from existing stockpiles to purchasing new systems specifically for Kyiv. The country previously donated eight Archer howitzers, along with 50 CV90 armored combat vehicles and “around 10” Leopard 2 tanks. Additionally, Sweden has supplied Ukraine with anti-air missile systems, further enhancing its defensive capabilities against Russian aggression.

Since the start of the war, Sweden’s military support for Ukraine has reached 61.9 billion kronor ($6.1 billion), according to official government figures. The latest aid package aligns with Stockholm’s broader commitment to assist Ukraine in its defense and counteroffensive operations.

Beyond military assistance, Sweden also announced a civilian aid package worth 1.4 billion kronor ($138 million) on Thursday. This funding will be directed toward humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, reflecting Sweden’s commitment to both the country’s immediate defense needs and its long-term recovery.

Sweden’s contributions come at a critical time as Ukraine continues to request additional military support from Western allies. With Kyiv emphasizing the need for sustained artillery supplies to counter Russian offensives, the Archer system—renowned for its mobility, rapid deployment, and precision firepower—will play a crucial role in bolstering Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities.
