South Korea offers to meet US short-range air defense requirements

South Korea’s Hanwha Corporation is planning to offer its next-generation air defense system, called the Biho 2, to meet the U.S. Army short-range missile-defense requirements.

A source from the Hanwha Corporation told that the company with a partner from the USA is working to offer new Biho 2 self-propelled air defense system to U.S. Army.

The Biho 2 is a next-generation air defense system with a powerful solution against all aerial threat (rockets, missiles, and weaponized drones).

This system, which is accumulated technology of Hanwha Defense, is designed to perform various missions in various battlefield environments. High maneuverability and excellent reaction time of Biho 2 not only improve alliance survivability, but is also very effective for air defense of major facilities.

The new self-propelled air defense system is an improved version of Hybrid Biho self-propelled gun and missile defense system that will be installed at a new AS21 Redback infantry fighting vehicle (or 8×8 wheeled platform).

The Biho 2 will be fitted with multiple weapon systems of universal missile and gun platform, included one 30 or 40mm cannon able to fire airburst ammunition, a new type of tactical anti-personnel explosive ammunition that detonates in midair, causing air burst effect fragment damage to an enemy.

In addition to the main armament, the Biho 2 armed with surface-to-air missile and surface-to-surface launchers that can be mounted to the roof side of the turret.

The Biho 2 was developed to meet the operational requirements to counter Unmanned Aerial Systems, Rotary Wing and Cruise Missile threats.
