Saab has announced plans to open a new production facility in Tampere, Finland, in 2025 to meet the growing demand for its Sirius Compact passive electronic warfare (EW) sensors.
As noted by the company, the decision follows the strong market reception of the sensor system, which has been in service since 2022 and has seen orders scheduled for significant deliveries starting in 2025.
“Saab’s footprint is growing in Finland with a focus on research and development operations in the field of electronic warfare. This initiative underscores Saab’s commitment to provide cutting-edge defense solutions to customers,” said Kristian Tornivaara, Managing Director for Saab Finland.
The Sirius Compact sensor family, designed for land, air, and naval domains, provides passive surveillance capabilities, including detection, geo-location, classification, and prioritization of hostile radar (R-ESM) and communication (C-ESM) emitters. Its modular and versatile design has made it a valuable tool for tactical Electronic Support Measures (ESM) operations.
Saab currently employs over 200 people across Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku, with plans for further recruitment as its operations expand. Beyond the Sirius Compact, Saab Finland also delivers sensor network capabilities and threat library management tools, enhancing its customers’ ability to conduct effective ESM operations.
The new Tampere facility will focus on volume serial production of Sirius Compact sensors, enabling Saab to meet increasing global demand. The facility is expected to begin operations in early 2025, further strengthening Finland’s role as a hub for advanced defense technology.
The Sirius Compact’s passive surveillance capabilities offer vital advantages for modern military forces, providing effective countermeasures against hostile radar and communication systems. Its applications in multiple domains reflect Saab’s commitment to delivering versatile, scalable solutions to its customers.
