Russian military receives new batch of T-90M tanks

Russia’s Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) has delivered a new batch of T-90M Proryv main battle tanks to the Russian Army.

The T-90M, which Russian President Vladimir Putin has called “the best tanks in the world,” is currently the most advanced main battle tank in Russia’s arsenal and is being actively deployed on the front lines.

The T-90M Proryv is equipped with modern electronic warfare systems designed to counter drones and a range of technologies aimed at reducing the tank’s visibility on the battlefield. Its enhanced defensive capabilities include reactive armor, a new composite armor layout, and countermeasures against anti-tank guided missiles, making it a key asset for Russia’s ground forces.

“Today, the famous military slogan ‘Everything for the front—everything for Victory’ is relevant again as never before!” said Alexander Potapov, General Director of JSC Uralvagonzavod. “With your incredible efforts, the highest professionalism, and daily hard work, you make a significant contribution to strengthening the defense capability of our Motherland, saving the lives of thousands of soldiers of our Army,” Potapov added, praising the factory workers responsible for producing the tanks.

Despite these deliveries, the T-90M has not been immune to battlefield losses. Approximately 107 of these tanks have been destroyed in the war in Ukraine, with around seven captured by Ukrainian forces in operational condition. This has raised questions among Western analysts about the tank’s effectiveness, with some experts criticizing it for retaining technical shortcomings from earlier Soviet-era tank designs, such as the T-72 and T-80 families.

Nonetheless, the T-90M remains a key component of Russia’s military strategy in Ukraine, where armored vehicles play a crucial role in ground operations. The tank’s advanced offensive and defensive systems are intended to provide enhanced survivability in a highly contested environment, although its performance in the field continues to be scrutinized.
