Russian helicopter had been shot down in Idlib Province in Syria

A helicopter crashed in the north of Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province on Monday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said, and the pilot was taken from the wreckage.

The Observatory said it could not confirm whether the helicopter was Syrian or Russian.

Images shared on social media purportedly showed a dead body and Russian identity documents taken from the crashed helicopter.

Aug 1 The Russian Defence Ministry said on Monday that one of its helicopters had been shot down in Idlib Province in Syria with five people on board, the Interfax news agency reported.

The ministry was quoted as saying that three crew members and two officers had been on board and that it was trying to ascertain their fate.

The Mi-8AMTSh is a transport helicopter which also carries various ground-attack weapons. Main role of this helicopter is to carry cargo and troops and support them with its firepower. It can also perform evacuation and combat search and rescue. It can soften-up enemy defenses before landing. This helicopter can engage enemy infantry, armored vehicles and even main battle tanks. Also it has secondary air-to-air capability against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and UAVs.

It was cited as saying that the helicopter, an Mi-8 military transport helicopter, had been shot down after delivering humanitarian aid to the city of Aleppo as it made its way back to Russia’s main air base in Syria.

On July 8, 2016 ISIS release footage of the shooting down of a Mi-36 helicopter near Palmyra   that killed 2 Russian pilots.

But Russian defense ministry said, that “On July 8, 2016 Russian training military pilots Ryafagat Khabibulin and Yevgeny Dolgin were making a test flight of a Syrian Mi-25 helicopter with ammunition in the Homs region (Syria).”

In video seens falling Mi-35 helicopter. The Mi-35M has a number of improvements. It differs from the basic model by main rotor system of the Mi-28 and X-shape tail rotor. Main rotor’s fiberglass blades have new aerodynamic profile. These are lighter but stronger due to titanium details. Helicopter also has upgraded turboshaft engines. Flight performance such as altitude and maneuverability improved due to these changes. Stub wings were shortened in order to reduce weight. Wings have a number of hardpoints for weapons and other uses.
