A Russian warship opened fire on a German military helicopter conducting a reconnaissance mission, according to Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from Berlin, further escalating the already strained relations between NATO allies and Moscow.
According to the German news agency DPA, which cited sources in Brussels, the Russian vessel fired warning shots as the German helicopter approached while on a reconnaissance operation over the Baltic. The exact circumstances leading to the confrontation are still under investigation, and details remain scarce.
“This was clearly an unacceptable act of aggression,” a German official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told DPA. The crew aboard the Russian vessel reportedly fired signal munitions, which are typically used as warning shots, in an apparent attempt to ward off the helicopter.
Minister Baerbock, attending a NATO meeting in Brussels, briefly mentioned the incident during an informal discussion but refrained from offering specifics. “We are aware of the situation and are working closely with our allies to ensure maritime safety and de-escalation,” Baerbock said.
The reconnaissance mission was part of a broader initiative to enhance surveillance of the Baltic region amidst increasing military activity by Russia in the area. NATO has been closely monitoring Russian naval movements due to heightened tensions and a series of provocations in recent months.
