Japan concerned that Russia deployed coastal missile complexes in the Kunashiri Islands

On March 29, the Sankei newspaper received from its own source the photos of a new military base that Russia is building on the Kunashiri island.

The released photos showed the new Russia’s military bases and also confirmed that Russia has deployed coastal missile systems (DBK) «Ball» on the island of Kunashiri (Kunashir in Russia). Kunashiri (Kunashir in Russia), meaning Black Island or Grass Island in Ainu, is the part of the Kuril Islands archipelago in the Pacific, between Kamchatka and Japan’s northern Hokkaido island.

The dispute over the islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories and in Russia as part of the Kuril Islands, has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty to formally end wartime hostilities.
