Finnish defense company Patria has strengthened its position in the unmanned systems sector with the acquisition of Nordic Drones, Finland’s leading drone manufacturer and professional pilot trainer.
This move, completed in the summer of 2024, marks a major milestone in expanding Finland’s defense industry and increasing export opportunities in the growing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) market.
As noted by the company, the acquisition integrates Nordic Drones into Patria’s portfolio, reinforcing its expertise in UAS technology. As a result, the company has introduced three cutting-edge drone systems: Patria SKY, Patria ONE, and Patria GEO. These advanced platforms address a range of operational needs, from high-security surveillance to data collection and mapping, enhancing Patria’s capabilities in both civilian and military applications.
Patria SKY is a long-range UAV system developed for security agencies and defense applications. Designed in collaboration with security industry experts, the drone meets high-level operational requirements and has undergone rigorous testing by Finnish authorities. Built for durability, Patria SKY is optimized for operations in challenging weather conditions, ensuring reliable performance in demanding environments.
Patria ONE is a versatile, modular UAV designed for multi-mission use. Its adaptable architecture allows for swappable radios, payloads, motor arms, and fiber optic control systems. Equipped with tether readiness and a three-step safety mechanism for handling explosive payloads, Patria ONE offers enhanced operational flexibility. Its compact design makes it transportable in a tactical backpack, further increasing its field applicability.
Patria GEO is a specialized terrain-mapping drone built for high-precision surveying and reconnaissance. With a flight time of up to 74 minutes, it can cover over 100 hectares in a single mission. Equipped with a 42-megapixel camera, Patria GEO provides a ground sample distance resolution of 2 centimeters when operating at an altitude of 150 meters, making it an ideal tool for detailed topographical analysis and infrastructure monitoring.
Patria plays an active role in Finland’s national drone strategy, which aims to leverage domestic technological expertise for business growth and national security. The company is a key participant in the eALLIANCE project, bringing together Finland’s top civil and defense sector innovators to drive advancements in UAV technology. Additionally, Patria is contributing to the European drone ecosystem through the ACTUS initiative, which focuses on the certification and development of tactical UAV systems under the European Defence Fund.
With its expanded unmanned systems portfolio, Patria is positioning itself as a major player in the global UAS market. By integrating advanced drone capabilities with Finnish and European defense initiatives, the company continues to drive innovation and operational excellence in modern aerial technology.
