DLS wins $1B contract for US Navy tactical radios

The U.S. Navy has awarded Data Link Solutions (DLS), a joint venture between BAE Systems and Collins Aerospace, an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract valued at up to $1 billion for the production, retrofit, development, and sustainment of Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS) terminals.

This contract includes modernization of existing systems and the addition of new capabilities for U.S. and coalition forces.

MIDS JTRS terminals provide Link 16 connectivity, enabling jam-resistant, line-of-sight voice, video, and data communications for air, sea, and ground platforms. The system supports real-time information sharing and situational awareness across diverse military assets, ensuring seamless interoperability in network-centric and data-intensive operational environments.

“MIDS JTRS brings different generations of platforms onto a common communications network. It provides more stable and secure gateways in the most contested scenarios,” said Amber Dolan, director of Data Link Solutions. “This award enables Data Link Solutions to modernize thousands of MIDS JTRS terminals and provide new capabilities that support a variety of missions for the U.S. Navy and coalition forces.”

The MIDS JTRS is a four-channel software-defined radio capable of running the Link 16 waveform alongside three additional communication protocols. Link 16 is a standardized system used by NATO and allied nations for real-time tactical data sharing. This scalability allows networks to be tailored to specific mission needs, enhancing operational effectiveness in contested environments.

The system is currently deployed on platforms including the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, and F-22 aircraft, as well as naval ships and command-and-control centers. Tactical Targeting Networking Technology, incorporated within MIDS JTRS, provides low-latency, high-capacity communications critical for operations in high-threat scenarios.

Data Link Solutions, a leader in Link 16 technology with over 25 years of experience, has delivered more than 9,000 systems to over 50 nations. Development and production of MIDS JTRS terminals will take place at DLS facilities in Wayne, New Jersey, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The contract supports the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Army, as well as NATO allies through the Foreign Military Sales program.

As part of the IDIQ contract, an initial task order valued at $116 million has already been awarded to provide terminals and spares, with additional production awards anticipated. This initiative underscores the U.S. Department of Defense’s commitment to maintaining advanced communication capabilities for its forces and allied partners.
