Rheinmetall has delivered the first Boxer Skyranger 30 air defense vehicle to the Bundeswehr.
The delivery, completed on schedule at the end of January 2025, provides the German armed forces with a verification model for evaluation before the system enters full production.
The Bundeswehr is set to begin admission trials in spring 2025 following initial user training. The contract, signed in February 2024, includes one verification model and 18 production vehicles, with serial deliveries planned primarily for 2027 and early 2028.
The Skyranger 30 system addresses a growing demand for mobile air defense, offering a combination of mobility, protection, flexibility, and precision to counter evolving threats at short and very short ranges. Mounted on the 8×8 Boxer tactical vehicle, it features a hybrid turret integrating a 30mm x 173 KCE revolver cannon, ground-to-air guided missiles, and an advanced sensor suite designed for both autonomous and networked operations. Initially, the German variant will be equipped with Stinger missiles, with plans for future upgrades to incorporate a specialized drone defense missile.
The system also utilizes AHEAD airburst ammunition, enhancing its capability to counter aerial threats such as drones and low-flying aircraft.
The Skyranger 30 is part of Germany’s NNbS air defense system and plays a central role in the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), an effort to strengthen air defense across NATO and the European Union. Germany has taken a leadership position in this initiative, with multiple partner nations already showing interest in acquiring the system. Hungary signed a contract in December 2023 for the development of the Skyranger 30 turret for its Lynx KF41 tracked vehicle. Austria and Denmark have also placed orders for the system on different platforms, while the Netherlands confirmed in January 2025 that it will procure 22 Skyranger 30 units, with the final contract expected to be signed by the end of the year.
The introduction of the Skyranger 30 represents a significant step in modernizing European air defense capabilities. The system is expected to enhance Germany’s ability to defend against drone swarms, cruise missiles, and other aerial threats. As more European nations integrate the Skyranger 30 into their armed forces, it is set to become a key element in the continent’s broader air defense strategy, ensuring a more coordinated and effective response to emerging threats in the evolving security landscape.
