Brazilian army evaluates new UT30BR2 turret on Guarani vehicle

The Brazilian Army has conducted field acceptance tests on the second prototype of its upgraded remotely operated weapon system, the UT30BR2, according to the Tecnologia & Defesa.

The tests were carried out on October 9 and 16 by personnel from the Army’s Manufacturing Directorate (Diretoria de Fabricação, DF) and the War Arsenal of Rio (Arsenal de Guerra do Rio, AGR), in coordination with the Army Evaluation Center (Centro de Avaliações do Exército, CAEx).

The UT30BR2 system is an updated version of the UT30BR Remote-Controlled Weapon Station, and is mounted on the 6×6 Guarani armored personnel carrier. As noted by the Directorate of Manufacturing, the objective of the activity was to assess the integration of the second prototype with the Guarani platform through functional evaluations and live-fire testing in the field.

The tests validate continued progress under contract No. 01/2023-DF, signed with ARES Aeroespacial e Defesa. The company, part of Brazil’s Defense Industrial Base (Base Industrial de Defesa, BID), is responsible for the system’s technological upgrade.

The UT30BR2 incorporates advancements in sensors, fire control, and automation, aiming to improve both lethality and situational awareness for the Brazilian Army’s mechanized infantry units. While detailed specifications of the upgrade were not released, the system remains centered on remote engagement capabilities with an integrated 30mm cannon and associated targeting subsystems.

ARES Aeroespacial has been working closely with the military on the UT30BR2 modernization effort since the project’s formal launch in 2023. The company has stated its goal is to deliver a scalable, modular system compatible with existing and future Brazilian armored platforms.
