ACUA Ocean has officially named its latest uncrewed surface vessel, USV PIONEER, marking a major milestone in the company’s efforts to advance maritime technology and autonomous operations.
The naming ceremony, held on March 4, 2025, brought together industry leaders, stakeholders, and partners, highlighting years of innovation and collaboration.
The event was led by ACUA Ocean Chair Marta Krupinska, who broke a champagne bottle against PIONEER’s hull in a traditional christening. The bottle itself carried symbolic significance, having been awarded to ACUA as the winner of the 2021 Rapid Challenge Competition for the most innovative UK engineering startup.
“There is a saying that it takes a village to raise a child; and ACUA is proof that it takes the support of a community to build a startup,” Krupinska said during the ceremony, emphasizing the collective effort behind PIONEER’s development.

ACUA Ocean CEO Neil Tinmouth also acknowledged the contributions of the company’s partners, funders, and supporters, describing PIONEER as a collaborative platform for deploying sensors and payloads in maritime operations. The event featured discussions on the growing use of uncrewed systems in industry and defense, with panelists from The Crown Estate, Blue Action, BP, and the Royal Navy highlighting potential applications and challenges.
PIONEER is designed for multiple roles, including environmental monitoring, offshore infrastructure support, and military applications. As an uncrewed vessel, it offers extended operational endurance with minimal logistical requirements, aligning with the increasing adoption of autonomous systems in defense and commercial sectors.

On March 11, ACUA Ocean reported that PIONEER had begun its test and evaluation phase in Plymouth Sound, drawing attention as it maneuvered through initial sea trials. Favorable weather conditions have allowed for early-stage testing, but the vessel will soon face more demanding environments to assess its full capabilities.
