UAE-based company develops dual-purpose drone

UAE-based autonomous systems developer ADASI has unveiled the SHADOW 3, a portable vertical take-off drone designed for dual roles as a loitering munition and counter-UAV interceptor.

The system, which is currently in the testing phase, is being developed by ADASI, part of EDGE Group, a leading defense conglomerate in the region.

According to the company, SHADOW 3 is intended to provide forces with a versatile, portable unmanned aerial system capable of adapting to rapidly evolving battlefield requirements.

The drone features a cruciform wing design and is equipped with GPS anti-jamming technology to ensure operational resilience in contested environments. ADASI says the SHADOW 3 can be configured with either an electric propulsion system or a turbine jet engine, giving it a broad performance envelope.

“The SHADOW 3 provides warfighters with a flexible tool that can intercept enemy UAVs, conduct electronic warfare operations, or execute precision aerial strikes,” the company said in a release. “Mission flexibility is enabled by its modular rear section, which can accommodate four electric push propellers or a turbine jet for higher speed engagements.”

With a range exceeding 30 kilometers and an endurance of up to 20 minutes, the SHADOW 3 can reach speeds between 200 km/h and 400 km/h depending on its propulsion system. It supports payloads of up to 3 kg and features autonomous target acquisition and engagement capabilities, enabling it to operate with minimal operator input.

The system’s guidance options include GNSS and an optical seeker, and it is designed for electric propulsion from a stationary launch position. ADASI also highlighted the platform’s computer vision navigation and target recognition capabilities, which allow it to operate in complex, GPS-denied environments.

The unveiling of SHADOW 3 reflects EDGE Group’s broader push to expand its portfolio of autonomous systems and advanced aerial platforms, as the company positions itself to meet growing demand for versatile unmanned solutions in modern conflict zones.

While ADASI has not confirmed a timeline for production or operational deployment, the company says SHADOW 3 is being designed to provide an affordable, easily deployable solution for military and security forces operating in highly contested airspace.
