Swedish defense company Saab has received a $48 million (525 MSEK) contract from BAE Systems to supply multiple Giraffe 4A radar systems to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe.
The systems are slated to enhance long-range surveillance and air base air defense, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027.
“Giraffe 4A is a multi-function radar that provides users a range of surveillance capabilities in support of comprehensive air defense,” said Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the U.S. “This system will modernize the U.S. Air Force’s expeditionary combat airfield surveillance operations and strengthen sensing capabilities, addressing a critical need overseas.”
The Giraffe 4A radar system is a cutting-edge digital multi-channel platform featuring Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology. It is designed for high mobility and can perform a wide range of surveillance and air defense tasks. Saab’s U.S. and Swedish facilities will collaborate on manufacturing and delivery of the systems.
The contract, managed by BAE Systems Technical Solutions & Services Inc. as the prime contractor, underscores ongoing efforts to enhance U.S. military readiness in Europe. The Giraffe 4A’s versatility and advanced capabilities are expected to play a pivotal role in securing expeditionary combat airfields and reinforcing overall air defense in the region.
