The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) has completed the transition from F-16s to F-35s for NATO’s nuclear deterrence mission.
Starting June 1, the advanced F-35 fighter jets will fully assume this critical role, as announced by Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren to the Dutch Parliament.
The transition marks a significant milestone for NATO’s nuclear strategy, with the Netherlands being the first European nation to make the switch to F-35s for this mission. The move follows years of rigorous testing and certification to ensure the F-35s are equipped for nuclear tasks.
The dual-capable F-35s, stationed at Volkel Air Base, will continue to provide conventional combat capabilities alongside their nuclear role. This transition reaffirms the Netherlands’ commitment to NATO’s collective security and nuclear deterrence strategy, which is crucial for maintaining peace and preventing aggression within the alliance.
