Russian Ivan Gren-class landing ship spotted in the Gulf of Finland

The new Russian Navy Ivan Gren amphibious assault ship (Project 11711) was spotted in the Gulf of Finland is the easternmost arm of the Baltic Sea. That was reported by .

The evolution of old Project 1171, the new Project 11711 was designed by Nevskoye Design Bureau. In the 60s-70s the shipyard built 14 ships of Project 1171. The lead ship of the Project, Ivan Gren, was laid down in December 2004 and launched in May 2012. Mooring trials were started in October 2015.

On June 17, 2016, the ship arrived at the delivery base in Baltijsk for a test in the special areas of the Baltic Fleet in the Baltic Sea.

Ivan Gren has a water displacement of 6,000 tons, its length is 120 meters and its beam is 16.5 meters. It can carry up to 300 marines, 13 main battle tanks or 36 armoured personnel carriers . It is fitted with two Ka-29 naval combat and transport helicopters, and a 30mm automatic cannon.
