Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced on Sunday, March 9, that Ukraine has signed a memorandum of understanding with German defense company Diehl Defence, the manufacturer of the IRIS-T air defense system.
The agreement is expected to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities by expanding cooperation and increasing the supply of air defense missiles and systems.
“Protecting Ukrainian skies and cities remains our priority,” Umerov stated. “This agreement paves the way for large-scale industrial projects that will enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.”
According to the memorandum, the supply of IRIS-T air defense systems and missiles to Ukraine is set to triple. Umerov expressed gratitude to Diehl Defence for its support, emphasizing the importance of leading global defense companies strengthening their partnerships with Ukraine. “The free world stands with us, and together we are opening new opportunities to enhance our defense,” he said.
The agreement is part of a broader effort to develop Ukraine’s defense industry and integrate it into the European defense ecosystem. The announcement follows Germany’s commitment in September 2024, when Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed that Germany had ordered a total of 17 IRIS-T air defense systems for Ukraine. This includes eight medium-range IRIS-T SLM systems and nine short-range IRIS-T SLS systems.
The IRIS-T system has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s air defense strategy, offering high-precision interception capabilities against a wide range of aerial threats. By deepening cooperation with Diehl Defence, Ukraine aims to further enhance its ability to defend against missile and drone attacks.
