Ukraine to bid on Brazilian Tamandaré class corvette programme

With the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Embassy of Ukraine in the Federative Republic of Brazil, a delegation of the Ukrainian State Enterprise ‘Ukrinmash’, which is part of the State Concern ‘UkrOboronProm’, visited the Rio de Janeiro from November 27 to 30.

A delegation from Ukraine’s defence industry concern met with officials from the Brazilian Naval Command, as well as heads of the Brazilian National Program for the develop of Tamandaré corvettes.

During the negotiations, the Ukrainian side presented a wide production capacity its shipbuilding companies, as well as scientific, technical and construction capabilities of the enterprises of the Defence Industrial Complex of Ukraine, which could be offered as part of the development of the Tamandaré class corvette programme.

Brazil and Ukraine are looking to expand defence industrial ties on naval programmes.

The Tamandare class corvette is a new fighting ship equipped with latest weapon systems. The corvettes should displace 2,790 metric tons, with 103.4 m length, 12.8 m width, and a top speed of 25 knots. Acquiring the corvettes is one of the Brazilian Navy’s top priorities, along with developing new conventional and nuclear-powered submarines.

At the moment, the ‘Ukrinmash’ jointly with the enterprises of the Ukrainian defence-industrial complex has started a large-scale work on preparation for participation in the tender, the announcement of which is expected in the first quarter of 2018.
