Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces released combat footage showing the detection and destruction of a Russian 300-mm Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system during an operation conducted on occupied territory in the Zaporizhzhia region.
The strike was carried out by operators of the “Ptahi” unit from the 1st Separate Center of the Unmanned Systems Forces, coordinated by the SBS Middle Strike command element.
The operation highlights Ukraine’s continued effort to counter long-range Russian rocket artillery that has been used in repeated strikes against Ukrainian cities located near the frontline and border regions. Systems such as the Tornado-S are regularly employed by Russian forces to attack urban areas including Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kherson, and Nikopol.
According to the Unmanned Systems Forces, the launcher was first detected using reconnaissance drones that tracked the system during combat activity. The published footage shows aerial surveillance identifying the launcher’s position before strike drones were directed toward the target. Ukrainian operators using FP-2 strike drones equipped with a satellite control system and fitted with warheads weighing up to 60 kilograms.
The Ukrainian military stated that the Tornado-S launcher was destroyed as a result of the drone strike. The engagement reportedly occurred on Russian-occupied territory within Zaporizhzhia oblast, though precise coordinates were not disclosed for operational security reasons.
The Tornado-S, known in Russia as a modernization of the Smerch rocket system, is a 300-mm multiple launch rocket system designed for long-range precision strikes. The system has a firing range of up to 120 kilometers and uses guided rockets capable of engaging infrastructure, troop concentrations, and urban targets at extended distances. Its improved targeting systems allow for greater accuracy compared with earlier Soviet-era rocket artillery.
Multiple launch rocket systems like the Tornado-S enable rapid saturation strikes over large areas or precision attacks using guided munitions. Because the launcher can fire and relocate quickly, it is often difficult to counter using traditional artillery or airpower, making persistent drone surveillance an increasingly important method for locating and targeting such assets.
Ukraine’s use of heavy strike drones reflects an evolving operational approach in which unmanned systems are tasked not only with reconnaissance but also with destroying high-value equipment traditionally targeted by missiles or aircraft.
