Ukraine shows off ‘Protector’ unmanned ground vehicle

Ukrainian Armor, a local manufacturer of armored vehicles, has unveiled its latest innovation on the test ground—the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) known as “Protector.”

Demonstrated for the first time under test conditions, the multipurpose drone is intended to ease the logistical burden on the front lines and reduce risk for personnel.

“Protector” is designed to act as a logistical workhorse, capable of delivering various types of supplies, including ammunition, mortar systems, and construction materials, to forward positions that are often difficult to access. The vehicle can carry up to 1,200 kg of cargo in a single trip, making it an essential asset for resupply missions under fire or across rugged terrain.

Built on a 4×4 off-road vehicle chassis, the Protector can easily navigate complex landscapes and even ford water up to one meter in depth. Its high mobility and operational reach are key factors that set it apart. Equipped with a 190-horsepower diesel engine, the UGV can reach speeds of up to 65 km/h, significantly accelerating the pace of resupply operations.

One operator, positioned at a safe distance of up to 10-12 kilometers, can remotely control the vehicle, guiding it through contested areas to complete its mission. The primary aim of the Protector is clear: replace human soldiers in hazardous scenarios to preserve lives.

The demonstration showed that the Protector can bring real operational advantages to the battlefield, enhancing both safety and logistical efficiency. Ukrainian Armor emphasized that one of the system’s main benefits is its cost-effectiveness and the relatively quick production timeline, allowing for swift deployment at scale.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has sparked a need for innovative, adaptable technology to respond to new types of combat environments. The Protector is another example of how Ukraine continues to innovate under challenging circumstances, seeking practical solutions that not only replace personnel in dangerous roles but also extend operational reach and flexibility.
