Ukraine offers maintenance for Indian aircraft carrier

Ukraine’s state-owned defence industrial concern UkrOboronProm has announced that a Ukrainian defence industry enterprise is ready to provide maintenance of Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

According to UkrOboronProm, Ukraine has offered maintenance to the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier Vikramaditya and will jointly produce gas turbine engines with the world’s largest importer of defense equipment.

The parties discussed further participation of Ukrainian defense industry enterprises in modernization and development of Indian Navy: continued delivery and joint production of gas turbine engines, maintenance of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya – built by specialists of Mykolaiv shipbuilding plant – by Ukrainian specialists.

Director General of the SC “UkrOboronProm” Pavlo Bukin emphasized the interest of Ukraine in joint production of ship and coastal radar systems, sea buoys, supplies of spare parts for Indian ships and submarines. The Chief of Naval Staff of the Republic of India expressed support and interest in cooperating with Ukrainian enterprises in a number of existing projects.

It is worth recalling that the 45,000-ton carrier was built at the Mykolaiv shipbuilding plant in Ukraine. INS Vikramaditya is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier  after years of extensive modifications and refurbishment which entered into service with the Indian Navy in 2013. The vessel was originally known as Baku and later renamed to Admiral Gorshkov.

This NS Vikramaditya can normally carry 12 to 16 fighters and 4 to 16 helicopters. Maximum capacity is 30 aircraft and 6 helicopters.
