On Saturday, August 10, Russian military correspondents reported that Ukrainian Defense Forces had shot down a Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter in the Kursk region.
According to these reports, the helicopter was destroyed using a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS). The exact location and time of the incident have not been disclosed by Russian sources.
Ilya Tumanov, a well-known figure in the Russian military aviation community and administrator of the ‘Fighterbomber’ channel, confirmed the downing of the Ka-52. He highlighted the critical role of aviation in Russia’s operations in the Kursk region and suggested that this incident might be an indication of more losses to come.
“The operation in the Kursk region is impossible without the use of aviation, and the pilots understand this,” Tumanov remarked, seemingly preparing the Russian public for potential future losses in the area.
As of now, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have not officially confirmed the downing of the Russian Ka-52 over the Kursk region. Ukrainian military authorities have generally refrained from commenting on incidents occurring on Russian territory this week. However, according to the Dutch open-source intelligence website Oryx, as of August 10, Russia has lost 60 Ka-52 helicopters since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Ka-52 “Alligator” is a Russian attack helicopter designed for a variety of combat operations, including the destruction of tanks, armored vehicles, low-flying targets, and providing support to ground forces. Its loss represents a significant blow to Russian military capabilities, especially in the ongoing conflict where air superiority remains a contested aspect.
