The United States Missile Defense Agency has awarded Iridium Communications a contract on January 15, 2026, for work under the Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense, or SHIELD, program.
The company said the award carries a ceiling of $151 billion and covers a wide set of work areas intended to field new capabilities for U.S. forces at increased speed and agility.
According to Iridium, the contract allows the government to place task orders for technology, services, and mission support aligned with SHIELD program requirements. As noted by the company, the work scope includes the rapid delivery of innovative capabilities intended for homeland defense and missile defense operations. The IDIQ structure enables the U.S. Missile Defense Agency to assign work as needed across the contract period, with Iridium positioned to support satellite-based voice, data, and positioning, navigation, and timing services.
Iridium stated that it operates the world’s only mobile satellite voice and data network with truly global coverage, enabling real-time connections between people, organizations, and assets from any location. The company highlighted that its service portfolio includes communications tools used by military forces for secure access to critical information in contested environments. According to a company release, the SHIELD award places Iridium within a framework to deliver technology that supports integrated missile warning, battle management, and homeland defense functions.
The SHIELD effort is focused on creating a layered defense architecture with modular and rapidly adaptable systems. The agency uses IDIQ contracts to expand industrial participation in next-generation missile defense development and sustainment, and to enable the rapid onboarding of emerging commercial technologies.
Iridium’s announcement follows broader U.S. efforts to strengthen space-enabled communications resilience. The U.S. government relies on multiple commercial and national satellite networks to ensure uninterrupted access to voice and data in crisis situations. According to the company, Iridium’s architecture uses cross-linked satellites that do not depend on ground stations within specific regions, which is designed to maintain service continuity in degraded or denied operational environments.
The company noted that SHIELD provides an avenue for U.S. forces to integrate commercial technologies into mission workflows more quickly than through traditional procurement programs. As a result, Iridium expects to support a variety of work areas across the contract duration once task orders are assigned.
Iridium also stated that its network supports real-time tracking of assets, mobile command communications, and mission-critical data exchange. The company emphasized that these functions contribute to situational awareness and coordination for military and government operators. SHIELD’s flexible structure enables the U.S. Missile Defense Agency to draw on these capabilities as it builds a layered architecture for detecting, tracking, and defeating missile threats.
