US Army trials hybrid recon vehicle

U.S. Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, tested the capabilities of the Next Generation Tactical Vehicle-Hybrid (NGTV-H) prototype during Combined Resolve 25-1, held at the Hohenfels Training Area in Germany on January 14, 2025.

The NGTV-H, a diesel-electric hybrid light reconnaissance vehicle, is part of the U.S. Army’s ongoing efforts to modernize its capabilities through the Transformation in Contact initiative.

The NGTV-H was developed to provide enhanced mobility, efficiency, and operational flexibility for reconnaissance missions. The vehicle’s hybrid powertrain combines diesel and electric propulsion systems, enabling quieter operations for stealth missions while reducing fuel consumption.

The NGTV-H is designed to meet the challenges of modern battlefields, offering capabilities such as:

  • Stealth Operations: Electric propulsion reduces acoustic and thermal signatures.
  • Increased Range: The hybrid powertrain extends operational endurance.
  • Enhanced Maneuverability: Designed for reconnaissance in difficult terrain.
  • Energy Efficiency: Reduced reliance on fuel enhances sustainability in remote or austere locations.
