Romanian lawmakers approve Patriot donation to Ukraine

Romania’s lower house of parliament has passed a draft law approving the donation of a Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine.

Reuters has reported that the decision comes as the war in Ukraine continues to impact neighboring nations, including Romania, a NATO member since 2004, which has experienced incidents of Russian drone fragments straying into its territory.

The approved legislation marks a pivotal step in Romania’s military aid to Ukraine, especially significant given the proximity of Russian attacks near the Romanian border.

President Klaus Iohannis is expected to sign the bill into law promptly, enabling the government to officially proceed with the donation. The law stipulates that Romania will donate one of its two operational Patriot systems, a crucial component of its strategic air defense capabilities. This system is part of a broader commitment by NATO states to bolster Kyiv’s defenses against escalating aerial threats from Russia.

To ensure continuity in its national defense capabilities, Romania has secured a commitment from its allies to replace the donated system with another Patriot system at a later date. The draft law asserts that the replacement system provided by the United States should not exceed the cost of the original unit purchased by Romania, with funding expected to come from “non-refundable foreign sources.”
